Welcome to Sandhills Motoring
There has always been more to Sandhills Motoring than the automobiles.
The cars may bring us together, but it is the people, the stories, the roads traveled, and the shared enthusiasm for motoring that have built our community. From an early morning gathering in the Village of Pinehurst to a winding back-road drive through the North Carolina countryside, from the history preserved in a remarkable automobile to the latest developments in motorsports, there is an entire culture surrounding the automobile that deserves to be explored and shared.
The Road Commission will serve as a place for announcements, news, event information, and stories from across Sandhills Motoring, but we intend for it to travel well beyond. Here, we will share stories from the automotive and motorsports worlds, explore interesting automobiles and the people behind them, reflect on automotive history, and occasionally offer a few opinions, observations, and musings about where car culture is – and where it may be headed.
Some stories will be distinctly local. Others may take us to racetracks, concours fields, museums, workshops, collections, manufacturers, and other destinations . We may look back at an automobile that changed an industry, consider a new model that has enthusiasts talking, celebrate the craftsmanship required to preserve a historic vehicle, or simply examine why a particular road, car, event, or moment remains memorable.
The Road Commission is intended to be much like a good conversation among automotive enthusiasts: informed but not overly serious, respectful of history without being trapped by it, and always open to the next interesting story.
Why Sandhills Motoring Exists
Sandhills Motoring was created around a simple belief: the automobile has an extraordinary ability to bring people together.
Our mission has never been solely about displaying cars. It is about building a community around them. We seek to create opportunities for enthusiasts of different generations, interests, backgrounds, and levels of experience to meet one another, share their knowledge, enjoy the road, preserve automotive history, and help ensure that enthusiasm for the automobile continues well into the future.
That philosophy extends across everything Sandhills Motoring does. Through the Sandhills Motoring Club, we create year-round opportunities for camaraderie, drives, gatherings, experiences, and automotive discovery. Through the Sandhills Motoring Expo, we welcome enthusiasts and visitors to the Sandhills for a celebration of automotive history, design, competition, and culture. Through the Road to Giving, we use our automotive community as a vehicle – quite literally – for supporting organizations and causes that make a difference in the community we call home. And through The Vault, we are creating a place for enthusiasts to gather while providing a home for the automobiles they value.
Underlying all of these efforts is an appreciation for the Sandhills itself. Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Carthage, and the surrounding communities provide a remarkable setting for motoring: beautiful roads, historic villages, welcoming businesses, and a community that understands the value of bringing people together. We want Sandhills Motoring to contribute to that character while introducing enthusiasts from outside our region to everything this area has to offer.
We believe that car culture is worth preserving. There will always be another road worth exploring, another automobile worth discovering, and another story worth telling.
